Larry McEnerney Discusses Changing Your Writing Mindset
Any time I contemplate sharing a social media post, I ask myself, “Does the content in this post inspire people to be better?” This LinkedIn post from best-selling author Brian Solis published a year ago certainly fits the bill.
Solis’ post shares a video of Lawrence McEnerney, the now-retired former Director of the University of Chicago's Writing Program, explaining the challenge we face as writers. We want our content to be provocative, memorable, and timely. However, the way we have historically been taught to write runs counterintuitive to meeting that need.
Take a look at the video. It’s less than four minutes long.
So, the bad news is that we were once writing for our teachers’ approval. Now we find ourselves writing for our clients and their legal departments’ approval.
The good news is that you have all of the training you need to change that mindset, and I will discuss that in my next post.
